A landfill collapse in Kampala, Uganda, on Friday has tragically claimed at least 20 lives, with the death toll likely to rise as search efforts continue. Fourteen people were injured, and several are still missing after the Kiteezi landfill, which sits on a steep slope, gave way, likely due to heavy rainfall. The site, where scavengers, including women and children, work for income, has been under consideration for closure for years. President Yoweri Museveni has called for an investigation into why people were living near such a hazardous area, questioning how the plan to relocate the landfill has stalled since 2016.
