This was a thrilling summer for one Wisconsin maritime team; a team from the Wisconsin Underwater Archeology Association recently located the lost schooner Margaret A. Muir at the bottom of Lake Michigan off of Algoma, Wisconsin at a depth of 50 feet. This was a 130-foot ship with three masts constructed in 1872; it went down on September 30, 1893, during a storm but had not been rediscovered for more than a century. The wreck was also identified by Brendon Baillod, an underwater archaeologist, and his team; the excellent state of preservation of the ship under water makes it possible to reveal many aspects of 19th-century naval construction. The team also intends to propose the site for listing on the National Register of Historic Places so that the piece of Great Lakes’ history can be made accessible to the public.
