A runaway penguin has been safely recovered in Japan nearly two weeks after she went missing, having traveled 45 kilometers (28 miles) during a typhoon in what her keeper described as a “miraculous” survival story.
The six-year-old Cape penguin, named “Pen,” was born and raised in captivity. She escaped while swimming with staff from the traveling Gekidan Penters zoo at a beach on Himakajima island in central Japan on August 25, according to Pen’s keeper Ryosuke Imai.
