Acid rain is a form of precipitation that is significantly more acidic than normal, typically with a pH below 5.6. This increased acidity is primarily due to the presence of sulfur dioxide (SO₂) and nitrogen oxides (NOₓ) in the atmosphere, which are produced by burning fossil fuels. When these gases mix with water vapor in the atmosphere, they form sulfuric and nitric acids, which then fall to the ground as acid rain. Acid rain can have harmful effects on the environment, including damaging forests, lakes, and rivers, as well as harming aquatic life and eroding buildings and monuments.
