It’s nearly impossible to remember life in Israel before the brutal Hamas attacks on October 7 a year ago; that life is gone for good, especially with over 100 hostages still held captive. This transformation extends beyond Israel. The region’s diplomatic and political landscape is being reshaped, reminiscent of the upheavals from the Arab-Israeli conflict decades ago. The changes since October 7 are both inevitable and preventable, with rising human costs that highlight missed diplomatic opportunities. A year ago, hopes for a historic normalization of relations between Saudi Arabia and Israel were high, but that vanished when Hamas breached the Gaza border. Regardless of intent, Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar succeeded in derailing those efforts.
