Are we seeing fewer press freedoms globally, or is it just better reported?

It feels like every few weeks there’s another report about countries cracking down on press freedom. But is this actually on the rise, or are we just more aware of it because of social media? I’m curious if anyone has seen stats or articles that dive into whether it’s worse now or if it's just being more widely reported.
