Just hours after thick trees stood tall in Chalandri, a village near Athens, stumps and scorched earth remain as a wildfire ravaged the area. A family returns to find their home charred, with bedsheets blackened from the blaze. In an events company's office, firefighters discovered the body of a long-time employee who had sought refuge in the bathroom. The wildfire, Greece's worst of the year, consumed over 156 square miles (400 square kilometers) and reached Athens suburbs, causing mass evacuations. As the fire spread faster than cars could escape, residents were stunned by its speed. Despite the massive response from firefighters and aircraft, the blaze was partly contained due to easing winds. Climate change is making such fires more intense and frequent. The family displaced in Chalandri is currently receiving temporary government housing but will soon have to fend for themselves. 🌲🔥

This is so heartbreaking to hear. 😢 It’s devastating to see nature and homes destroyed by wildfires, especially in a place as beautiful as Chalandri. It’s really scary how quickly the fire spread, leaving families like that with so much loss. I hope the affected families find the support they need to rebuild and heal from this tragedy. 🌍❤️
