Axolotls, those adorable, pink, Muppet-like salamanders, have captured hearts worldwide, thanks to their unique look and pop culture appearances, like in Minecraft. But behind their fame lies a serious conservation issue: theyāre critically endangered, with fewer than 100 left in the wild, mainly in Lake Xochimilco, Mexico. As the lake's environment deteriorates, efforts to save them include combining local and scientific knowledge, especially through restoring the ancient chinampa farming system. Although axolotls are popular pets, their wild counterparts face a tough battle for survival, and raising awareness is key to their conservation.
