Ludwig van Beethoven began to experience hearing problems in his late 20s, around 1798. His deafness gradually worsened over time. By the time he was in his 40s, he had become almost completely deaf. Despite his hearing loss, Beethoven continued to compose some of his most famous works during this period, including the Ninth Symphony.
