The bird flu outbreak in the U.S. has rapidly spread to mammals in at least 31 states, including cows in 12 states, foxes, mice, striped skunks, mountain lions, harbor seals, and alpacas. Since March 1, at least 21 domestic cats in nine states have been infected, encompassing feral, barn, and household pets, according to the USDA. Although the H5N1 virus can be transmitted through cats' saliva, feces, or other body fluids, the CDC states that human infection from pets is unlikely. Four humans have contracted the virus through farm exposure and have fully recovered, with efforts underway to control the spread.
