Can old charges still show up internationally?

Hello. I had a minor criminal case many years ago, everything was resolved and closed. Since then I’ve moved on, changed countries, and built a normal life. But recently I’ve been getting extra checks when crossing borders, which never happened before. It made me think — could something from the past still be affecting me on an international level? I honestly thought everything was long gone.

Yes, unfortunately, that can happen. Not all systems automatically update or remove old entries, especially if they were shared internationally. Even resolved cases can leave traces if they weren’t properly cleared in every database. From what I’ve read, people usually start by requesting access to their records and then, if needed, apply for correction or deletion. There’s a decent explanation of how that works on nordinterpollawyers.com, including what kind of arguments are used in such cases. It’s not instant, but if the case is truly closed, there’s a good chance it can be cleaned up properly.
