Can someone explain the concept of 'terroir' in winemaking?

I've come across the term 'terroir' many times in wine discussions, but I'm still not entirely sure what it encompasses. How does terroir affect the taste of wine, and can you really taste the difference between regions? Would love some insights from the wine aficionados here!

Climate the amount of sunshine, temperature variations, and rainfall all affect the ripeness and flavor profile of the grapes. For example, cooler climates often produce wines with higher acidity and more subtle fruit flavors, while warmer climates can result in riper, bolder flavors.
