The Philippine government has accused China of firing flares at one of its aircraft during a South China Sea patrol. On August 19, 2024, a Chinese fighter jet reportedly deployed flares dangerously close to a Philippine Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) plane near Scarborough Shoal. Flares were also launched near the same plane from Subi Reef on August 22.
These incidents come amid growing tensions between the two countries, with recent maritime confrontations adding to the strain. The Philippines has urged China to halt these provocative actions, which are seen as threats to regional stability and maritime security.
