A Chinese lunar probe carrying samples from the far side of the Moon is set to return to Earth today, concluding a challenging 53-day mission praised as a global first. The exact landing time in northern Inner Mongolia hasn't been disclosed, but experts estimate it will happen around midday (0400 GMT). The mission, named Chang'e-6, launched from Hainan on May 3 and landed in the Moon's South Pole-Aitken Basin a month later. It used advanced tools to gather rocks and soil from a region less studied due to its rugged, lava-free terrain. These samples are expected to deepen our understanding of lunar formation and evolution. China has significantly ramped up its space ambitions under President Xi Jinping, including plans for manned missions to the Moon by 2030 and a lunar base in the future, amidst geopolitical tensions with the United States over space dominance.
