Kampala’s Kiteezi landfill has been hit by a devastating landslide, tragically taking at least 12 lives and forcing around 1,000 people to flee their homes. The landslide, triggered by relentless heavy rain, collapsed a massive hill of rubbish, burying homes on the landfill’s edge while people slept. Rescue teams are working tirelessly, with 14 survivors pulled from the debris and more bodies being discovered. This landfill, the city’s sole waste site, has long been a critical source of livelihood for many scavengers. The urgent search for a new waste site continues amidst this unfolding tragedy.
