The budget for James Cameron's "Titanic" was so huge it surpassed the cost of building the actual ship in 1912. The budget for the movie was approximately $200 million, making it the most expensive film ever made at the time of its release. Meanwhile, the cost to build the actual RMS Titanic in 1912 was about $7.5 million at that time (roughly $200 million today when adjusted for inflation).
So, technically, the cost of making the movie was about the same as the cost of building the real ship in today's dollars.
