In 1895, Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen was experimenting with cathode rays when he accidentally discovered X-rays. 
He noticed that a fluorescent screen in his lab started to glow even though it wasn’t exposed to visible light. 
Röntgen didn’t initially understand what the rays were, so he called them "X-rays," with "X" representing the unknown. 
This discovery was pivotal in medical diagnostics, but it's fascinating that it was a complete accident.
