Do elite athletes actually have better pain tolerance, or is it just mind over matter?

Always wondered about this—do top-tier athletes physically feel less pain, or are they just better at pushing through it? Like, is there science behind their nerves being less sensitive, or is it all mental toughness and adrenaline? I’ve seen some wild moments where athletes play through serious injuries, and I’m like… HOW?! Anyone here deep into sports science or just have thoughts on this?
