Do onions in the fridge absorb bad smells, or is that just kitchen folklore?

So I’ve heard this thing where if you leave a cut onion in the fridge, it supposedly absorbs bad odors and keeps everything fresh. But… doesn’t that mean my fridge just smells like onions instead? 🤔 I accidentally left half an onion uncovered in there, and now my butter has a hint of oniony-ness (not the worst thing, honestly). Anyone actually use onions as a fridge deodorizer, or is this one of those old kitchen myths?
