Does anyone know the science behind altitude training for athletes

I’ve heard so much about athletes training at high altitudes for better performance, especially in sports like cycling and running. But what’s the science behind it? How exactly does training at high elevation improve their stamina or oxygen efficiency? I’d love to understand how it works on a biological level. Also, do any athletes have specific stories about their experiences with altitude training? Sounds like a tough but fascinating experience!
