MANILA, Philippines — The El Niño phenomenon officially ended, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said Friday. Pagasa Administrator Nathaniel Servando said the conditions in the tropical Pacific have returned to El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO)-neutral levels, hence, the end of the weather phenomenon that brought dry spells and drought in many areas across the country. Servando said there would be "69 percent possibility" of a transition from ENSO-neutral to La Niña by July-August-September season. "With these developments, the final advisory for El Niño (2023-2024) is issued and the Pagasa ENSO Alert and Warning System is now lowered to inactive (ENSO-neutral) while the La Niña Watch remains in effect," the Pagasa chief said. Amid the prevailing southwest monsoon ("habagat"), Servando said the impact of El Niño such as warmer-than-usual surface temperature and below-normal rainfall, may still continue in some areas of the country.
