Posts on both YouTube and Facebook identified as ‘fake news’ have continued to circulate on social media platforms due to the approaching 2024 elections, giving celebrity endorsements from Taylor Swift and Ryan Reynolds. These posts, usually generated by AI, lead the audience to think that some stars support candidates who, in fact, do not. The News Literacy Project that has recently unveiled a database covering more than 550 cases of just such election-related disinformation stresses that the belief, fueled by sites like X (previously, Twitter), is a major threat to democracy. It seems counterintuitive but many have tried to expose them as lies but the flood and influence of these images and faked photographs created by AI are making it difficult to set in the truth.
It’s like a never-ending game of whack-a-mole trying to keep up with all these deceptive posts!
