Fewer countries are banning plastic straws, but more are focusing on cigarette butts?

I feel like a couple of years ago, everyone was all about banning plastic straws to save the turtles, but lately, I’ve been seeing way more news about cigarette butts being the focus of environmental cleanups and bans. Has anyone else noticed this shift? Is this a bigger problem globally than straws ever were? I wonder if it’s just a trend or if there’s some kind of data behind why butts are the new enemy. Anyone have any thoughts on why this is happening?

Totally noticed this too! I think part of it is that cigarette butts are one of the most littered items worldwide, and they take forever to break down, just like plastic. Maybe the focus is shifting because they’re an even bigger problem than straws when it comes to pollution. I’d be curious to see if there’s been more data or studies recently pushing this into the spotlight. It’s wild how these environmental focuses seem to come in waves!
