Fireflies, also known as lightning bugs, use bioluminescence to produce light. This light is created through a chemical reaction in their lower abdomen involving a substance called luciferin, an enzyme called luciferase, oxygen, and other chemicals. The light is used for communication, attracting mates, and warding off predators. Each species of firefly has its own unique pattern of light flashes.

Hey! Did you know fireflies create light using a cool chemical reaction in their bellies with luciferin and luciferase to chat, flirt, and scare off predators, each with their own unique flash pattern? Thanks for suggesting it! 🪲✨
