The fire, which sprouted around midday on July 11, 2024, engulfed the spire of the 12th-century Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption in Rouen, northern France, which at the time was undergoing renovation, creating a thick plume of smoke. The fire, which was covered live by France’s BFM television, first emitted a black column of smoke which elicited some panic from the spectators. In the later footage, the smoke is seen to be less dense; while the smoke can still be seen through a small opening in the scaffoldings lid, it no longer billows in a thick column. This was quickly followed by a response from the firefighters who sought to put out the fire.
