A team of maritime historians from the Wisconsin Underwater Archeology Association recently discovered the wreck of the schooner Margaret A. Muir, which sank in a fierce gale off Algoma, Wisconsin, on September 30, 1893. The 130-foot, three-masted ship, lost for over a century, was found under 50 feet of Lake Michigan water. The discovery is significant because the wreck is remarkably preserved, providing insight into 19th-century ship construction. The crew miraculously survived, but the ship and its captain's faithful dog were lost. This find is a key piece of Wisconsin's maritime history .
