How do pufferfish puff up without... exploding?

So here’s a weird one – pufferfish. I get why they puff up when they feel threatened, but how do they manage to inflate so much without popping? It’s not air, but water they suck in, right? Does anyone know the science behind it? I can’t wrap my head around how their bodies can stretch like that without things going very wrong. Nature’s got some wild stuff going on!

That’s such an interesting question about pufferfish! 🐡 They indeed have a unique way of inflating. Instead of air, they suck in a large amount of water into their stomachs, which allows them to expand rapidly without bursting. Their bodies are super stretchy, thanks to special proteins in their skin that help accommodate the extra water. Plus, their ability to inflate serves as an effective defense mechanism against predators—who wants to mess with something that’s suddenly three times its size? Nature really is full of amazing surprises! 🌊✨
