Is it true that blue was once considered a 'girly' color, while pink was for boys?

I read somewhere that up until the early 20th century, blue was associated with girls and pink with boys. Apparently, pink was seen as a strong color, and blue was softer, which is why they switched. Has anyone else heard of this? Why do you think that perception flipped?
