Robert Macri built a luxury hotel in the Kenyan coastal village of Kipini 100m away from the waters of the Indian Ocean.
However, within five years, the hotel's nine guest cottages had been swallowed by the sea, one after another. Now other residents of Kipini village are experiencing the same situation even though their houses are located further back from the hotel.
Saida Idris, a community leader, said on Aug. 14 that the ocean rises every day and their houses are becoming weaker. She added that multiple people had lost their lives and an unspecified number were missing after being carried away by the rising sea levels, combined with strong winds and heavy tides, particularly during the night.
