Laura Dern recently revealed that she was told she was "insane" by her college for putting her position in "Blue Velvet" above her studies and that this pushed her to quit out
. Ironically, the film is now taught at the same school, which irritates and contradicts Dern
. This circumstance calls into question the ways in which academic commitments are valued and acknowledged more highly than creative contributions by institutions, as well as the changing notions of success. In what ways, in your opinion, does this discrepancy point to wider trends in how creative accomplishments are valued more highly than conventional educational routes?
