Filipino boxer Carlo Paalam advanced to the quarterfinals of the Paris Olympics men's 57kg class after outpointing Irish Jude Gallagher in the round of 16 at the North Paris Arena on Wednesday evening, July 31 (Manila time). Gallagher made a good account of himself in his Olympic debut but Paalam's smarts and experience stood out, as the Tokyo Olympics silver medalist gained the scores of four 29-28s and one 30-27. The 26-year-old and 5-foot-4 Paalam, who is now one win away from securing a medal, narrowly outgunned the 22-year-old the 5-foot-7 Gallagher in the first two rounds but turned his workrate up notch in the third and final frame enough to convince the judges. Paalam thus ended the Philippine boxing team's two-fight losing streak following the quick exits of Eumir Marcial (men's 80kg) and Hergie Bacyadan (women's 75 kg).
