The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said on Thursday that it was closely monitoring a tropical storm outside the country's area of responsibility. Its international name is "Shanshan." The tropical storm, estimated some 2, 140 kilometers east of Central Luzon,is not expected to directly affect the archipelago in the coming days, weather specialist Benison Estareja said. Packing maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 80kph, Shanshan was moving west-southwest at 10kph, the state-run weather agency said. "The tropical storm is very far from the Philippine landmass," according to the Pagasa forecaster. The state weather bureau in its 5 a.m. advisory said the easterlies - winds coming from the east that pass through the Pacific Ocean and carry humid and warm weather - are prevailing particularly over the eastern sections of Visayas and Mindanao. Metro Manila and the rest of the country, meanwhile, would be experiencing isolated rain showers or thunderstorms due to the localized thunderstorms within 24 hours. "It would be again generally fair weather in most parts of the country as hot weather could be felt especially at noontime while isolated downpours during late afternoon or at night," Estareja said.
