A Pakistani man with links to Iran, Asif Raza Merchant, has been arrested for allegedly plotting to assassinate a US official in retaliation for the 2020 killing of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani. The Justice Department stated that Merchant, who tried to hire undercover FBI agents for the job, was apprehended just before leaving the country. Attorney General Merrick Garland emphasized the department's commitment to countering Iran's threats against American officials. This arrest follows a similar case in 2022, where a member of Iran's Revolutionary Guards was charged with plotting to kill former National Security Advisor John Bolton, a claim Iran has denied.
