In Northern Samar, special education teacher Ronnel Jolejole-Aurel cherished all ten of his students, but a particularly memorable one was a nine-year-old with mild autism who couldn't communicate except through loud cries. With Jolejole-Aurel's support, the child progressed from frequent tantrums to making non-verbal requests and eventually learning to hold a pen, sparking hope for alphabet lessons. However, numerous heat-related class suspensions and challenges with remote learning erased this progress, setting the class back to square one. Jolejole-Aurel emphasized that his students, who have short-term memory issues, forget lessons quickly after interruptions, impacting their education. This situation reflects a broader issue in the Philippines, where climate-induced school closures have caused significant learning losses, hindering recovery efforts from the pandemic and affecting the country's educational standings.
