In a surprising twist of shark science, researchers tagging pregnant porbeagle sharks off Cape Cod discovered that their tagged shark had been eaten by a larger predator. Initially intended to track the porbeagle’s habitat, the tracker unexpectedly recorded data indicating the shark was consumed by another shark, likely a great white or shortfin mako. This is the first recorded predation of a porbeagle shark and highlights the complex interactions among large shark species. The findings emphasize the need to study these predator relationships further to understand their impact on shark populations and ocean ecosystems.
