Authorities across the U.S. are investigating racist text messages targeting children, college students, and professionals, with disturbing references to "slave catchers" and "picking cotton," following the presidential election. These messages, sent from unknown numbers, have been reported in over a dozen states, including New York, Nevada, and Washington, D.C. The NAACP warned of the broader implications, condemning the rise in hateful rhetoric, which they say is fueled by a president who has historically encouraged such views. Attorneys general from both parties are working to track down the senders.
The FBI and other authorities are involved, with TextNow, the company that some of the messages came through, calling it a “coordinated attack.” The messages appear to target Black and Brown individuals, including students. One recipient, Talaya Jones, a Black woman from New Jersey, was shocked to receive a message telling her she had been “selected to pick cotton at the nearest plantation.” She shared the message with CNN, calling it a painful reminder of how far the country still has to go in overcoming racial hatred. The incident highlights the disturbing increase in racism and fear following the election. 💔📱👎

This is absolutely heartbreaking and unacceptable. 💔 These racist messages are a painful reminder that we still have so much work to do when it comes to fighting hate. 😔 It’s vital that we stand together against these acts and support the efforts to hold those responsible accountable.
