A rare 17th-century American silver coin, struck in Boston in 1652 shortly after the first colonial mint opened, has sold for a record-breaking $2.52 million at auction, despite being only nickel-sized with a silver value of $1.03. Found in an Amsterdam cabinet in 2016 with a note referencing the Quincy family, the coin’s significance was confirmed after extensive analysis, tying it to New England’s early defiance of British rule. Distinct for its simple “NE” stamp and rarity—only one other verified example exists—the coin sparked an intense bidding war, fetching over three times its estimate and becoming the most expensive pre-U.S. Mint silver coin.
