An age-related research that has been carried out today provides evidence that liver cell, particularly hepatocytes, can be rested. Ferroptosis is an iron dependent cell death process and based on this, the research investigates gene clusters associated with this process in mice and human liver cells. Comparing older mice and NAFLD patients, Akagi et al unveiled that there was a set of genes out of the thousands that could be targeted to produce corresponding treatment. Ferrostatin-1 is a drug that works against ferroptosis and they applied it on older mice with NAFLD, and they discovered that the LECs seemed to regain youthful characteristics and were overall healthier; this made them conclude that medication could help make aging people’s livers functional again.
