Rainbow flags fluttered as gay and lesbian couples strolled hand in hand down a makeshift aisle in Bangkok’s bustling Siam shopping district.

The local LGBTQ+ community was celebrating the passage of a marriage equality bill by Thailand’s Senate, and the atmosphere was filled with joy.

Although the ceremonies were symbolic reenactments of same-sex weddings, the possibility of legal marriages appears imminent.

“When I was younger, people said that we couldn’t have a family or children, so marriage seemed impossible,” Bangkok resident Pokpong Jitjaiyai told CNN on the day the bill was passed.

“Now, I can proudly say that I am gay,” said Pokpong, who eagerly anticipates marrying his partner, Watit Benjamonkolchai.
