According to a research paper titled "Dehydration melting at the top of the lower mantle" published in online Science magazine recently, there's a big reservoir of water 300 miles beneath the Earth's surface.
Scientists call it "ringwoodite" and say it is in sponge-like condition.
Geophysicist Steve Jacobsen shared that the ringwoodite has a crystal structure that lets it attract hydrogen and hold onto water despite the extreme state of the Earth's deep mantle.
