South Korea’s main opposition party, the Democratic Party warned it will begin impeachment proceedings against President Yoon Suk Yeol today after he declared martial law in a late-night speech that caused anger among politicians and the public. This decree outlawed politics, demonstrations, and going on strike, and anyone found wanting would face stiff penalties. Yoon said that it was going to happen because of the actions of the opposition party, but it was met with resistance as early as that day by some factions within his own camp. The lawmakers vehemently opposed the move by voting to cancel the decree, and after some hours of stand-off, Yoon rescinded the decree saying he was implementing what parliament had decided. The U.S. Embassy asked the citizens to stay away from areas with demonstrations owing to the volatile nature of the situation. 😟

This is intense—what a dramatic turn of events. It’s reassuring that the decree was rescinded, but the whole situation underscores just how fragile the balance of power can be in politics. Hoping for a peaceful resolution and safety for everyone involved, especially with tensions running so high.
