SpaceX's Starship prototype has achieved a major milestone by successfully completing a 50-kilometer test flight! On June 6, 2024, Starship Ship 29 and Super Heavy Booster 11 launched from Texas, executing complex maneuvers, including a simulated landing and re-entry into Earth's atmosphere.
Key achievements included a successful simulated landing of the Super Heavy booster at a "virtual tower" over the Gulf of Mexico and a powered vertical landing for Starship after surviving peak heating during re-entry. Following previous test flights, SpaceX made several enhancements, such as upgrading oxygen tanks for better propellant filtration and adding roll control thrusters for improved stability.
With this success, SpaceX is closer to developing a fully reusable spacecraft for crewed and cargo missions on long-duration interplanetary flights. The next phase includes additional test flights, focusing on a booster landing with the tower arms.
