A sudden and violent storm off the coast of Sicily sank the luxury yacht "Bayesian," killing at least five people and leaving many shocked by the deadly event. Scientists say this could be a glimpse of the future as climate change fuels more extreme weather in the Mediterranean, a region warming faster than the global average. The yacht was likely struck by a waterspout, one of many caused by unusually warm sea temperatures, which have reached 30°C (86°F) around Sicily—5.4°F above normal. With the Mediterranean becoming a climate change hot spot, intense storms and catastrophic weather are becoming more frequent, raising concerns about the region's future.
