Sushi rolling mat vs. alternative tools — is there really a difference?

I’ve been using a traditional bamboo mat to roll my sushi, but I’ve seen silicone mats and even no-mat methods popping up. Do these alternatives work as well, or do you lose something in the technique? Has anyone here tried switching tools, and how did it affect the final roll?

Silicone mats and no-mat methods can work well for rolling sushi. Silicone mats provide a non-stick surface and can be easier to clean, while no-mat techniques often involve using plastic wrap to avoid sticking. Some people find they get more control with these alternatives, but traditional bamboo mats are great for achieving that classic sushi roll texture and tightness. It’s worth trying out the different methods to see which one you prefer!
