The forbidden smell: why can’t we smell our own house?

You know how every house has a smell? Like, your friend’s place has a distinct smell, but your own house just smells… like nothing to you? I read that it’s because our noses get used to familiar scents and filter them out. But how come we still smell other things like food or candles at home? Does this mean we all have a “house smell” that we don’t even know about??
