The Initial Proposed Name of Planet Uranus

When William Herschel discovered Uranus in 1781, he initially proposed naming the planet "Georgium Sidus," which means "George's Star". 🪐 He chose this name in honor of King George III of Britain, who was the reigning monarch at the time and a supporter of Herschel's work. 🫅

But astronomers decided to maintain the tradition of naming planets after mythological figures, and the seventh planet became known as Uranus.

Imagine if it had stayed 'George’s Star'—the jokes would’ve been endless! 😂 Still, I love how astronomy ties back to mythology. Naming it Uranus feels like it connects the discoveries of the modern age to the stories of the past. Makes you wonder what names we’ll come up with for planets in other star systems someday!
