When William Herschel discovered Uranus in 1781, he initially proposed naming the planet "Georgium Sidus," which means "George's Star". He chose this name in honor of King George III of Britain, who was the reigning monarch at the time and a supporter of Herschel's work.
But astronomers decided to maintain the tradition of naming planets after mythological figures, and the seventh planet became known as Uranus.
