It is important to note that the term constrict actually means ‘to grip or grasp rather tightly’; as such, python doesn’t actively compress its prey. But does for when its chest expands and knowing the prey has taken a breath in, it grips all the tighter. They suffocate a creature with it slowly, securely, each breath they can FORCE into their lungs brings them closer to death.
