Truong My Lan, an entrepreneur who was once listed as one of Vietnam’s richest women, has been convicted of stock fraud and embezzlement of more than $12 billion, or 3 percent of Vietnam’s gross domestic product. Her embezzlement scheme of an enormous amount of money through the internet from a leading bank through shell companies has shaken the financial system of the country. However, if she can offer three-quarter of the stolen amount which is $9 billion, she is free from the death sentence. It has revealed that corruption pervades Vietnam’s banking industry and that the country’s financial structure is rather unstable. The government has threatened to take appropriate action against such scams in the fight against corruption despite corruptions within officials who watched the scam grow 💸.

I think this shows how extreme some countries’ legal systems can be with financial crimes. It’s shocking though—$9B is massive! 💸😳
