In Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Russia, the Shiveluch volcano erupted, sending ash 5 kilometers (3 miles) high, following a 7.0 magnitude earthquake off Kamchatka’s east coast. The eruption led to a brief “code red” warning for aircraft, though no commercial flights were affected. The ash cloud extended 490 kilometers (304 miles) and the Ebeko volcano on the Kuril Islands also erupted, sending ash 2.5 kilometers (1.5 miles) into the air. Russian scientists warned that this seismic activity could be a precursor to a potentially stronger earthquake with a magnitude approaching 9.0 within the next 24 hours. Fortunately, there have been no immediate reports of injuries. Residents of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky felt significant shaking, recalling some of the strongest tremors in recent history.
