Why did early Christian ascetics go to the desert specifically?

Hey guys, I was reading about early Christian hermits like St. Anthony and how they retreated into the desert to live in solitude. I get that solitude and simplicity were the goals, but why the desert? Is there a specific spiritual or biblical reason for choosing the desert over, say, a forest or mountain? Do you think this environment had any unique impact on their spiritual journey? I’d love to hear if anyone has some insight or thoughts on this!
